Yacht Terminology

  1. LOA (Length Overall): LOA refers to the overall length of the yacht from the tip of the bow to the stern, including any extensions, swim platforms, or bowsprits.
  2. Beam: Beam is the width of the yacht at its widest point. It is measured from one side of the hull to the opposite side.
  3. Draft: Draft is the depth of the yacht’s hull below the waterline. It is measured from the waterline to the lowest point of the hull.
  4. Displacement: Displacement is the weight of the yacht, including all onboard equipment, fuel, water, supplies, and passengers.
  5. Gross Tonnage: Gross Tonnage is a measurement used to determine the overall size of a yacht, indicating its interior volume rather than weight. It is calculated based on the internal volume of the yacht’s enclosed spaces.
  6. Freeboard: Freeboard is the vertical distance between the waterline and the deck of the yacht. It provides an indication of how much of the yacht’s hull is above the waterline.
  7. Ballast: Ballast refers to the additional weight placed in the keel or bottom of the yacht to improve stability and control while underway.
  8. Keel: The keel is the central structural element running along the bottom of the yacht’s hull. It provides stability and helps to prevent sideways drift.
  9. Bow: The bow is the forward section of the yacht. It is the front part that cuts through the water.
  10. Stern: The stern is the aft or rear section of the yacht.
  11. Port: Port refers to the left side of the yacht when facing the bow.
  12. Starboard: Starboard refers to the right side of the yacht when facing the bow.
  13. Cockpit: The cockpit is the open area of the yacht, usually located in the aft section, where passengers can gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.
  14. Helm: The helm refers to the steering and control area of the yacht, typically located on the bridge or at the main helm station.
  15. Salon: The salon is the main living area of the yacht, often located on the main deck. It may include seating, dining areas, and entertainment facilities.
  16. Stateroom/Cabin: A stateroom or cabin is a private sleeping area onboard the yacht. It typically includes a bed, storage, and sometimes an en-suite bathroom.
  17. Galley: The galley is the yacht’s kitchen area, equipped with appliances, cooking facilities, and storage for food and supplies.
  18. Head: The head is the bathroom or toilet area onboard the yacht.
  19. Flybridge: The flybridge is an additional level or deck located above the main deck, typically offering an elevated helm station, seating, and entertaining space.
  20. Tender: A tender is a smaller auxiliary boat carried by the yacht, used for transportation to and from shore or for exploring areas where the yacht cannot navigate.
